The United States Department of Agriculture announced a recall on Dec. 31 involving 6,768 pounds of raw ground beef that may be contaminated with the bacteria E.coli. The now recalled products were produced and distributed by Valley Meats LLC on Dec. 22 with use by dates of Jan. 15, 2024 on the packages.
The ground beef was shipped to distribution centers in Indiana, Illinois, Iowa and Michigan and then further distributed to restaurants and other institutions, according to the USDA. The recalled beef was packaged in several different sizes ranging from 12-pound boxes to 40-pound boxes. A full list of the packages that were recalled and how to identify them can be found on the USDA website.
There have been no confirmed illnesses as a result of the issue, which was identified after third-party testing on beef submitted for analysis confirmed the presence of E. coli. If you have any of the recalled products in your refrigerator or freezer, you should discard the beef immediately.
E. coli is a potentially deadly bacteria that typically causes a person to be sick for several days. Symptoms of E. coli include dehydration, bloody diarrhea and abdominal cramps. If you believe you may have E. coli poisoning, you should seek medical attention immediately.
