U.S. stocks finished the week on a downbeat note, finishing Friday lower after advancing to start the session.

The S&P 500 finished Friday down 1.1%. The Dow industrials fell 1.1%, or 338 points, while the Nasdaq dropped 1.3%. All three indexes finished the week in the red as the third quarter's final month began on shaky footing. The Nasdaq is down for six straight sessions, its first such stretch since 2019.

The two-year yield edged downward on Friday to finish the week at 3.398%. The 10-year also dropped from Thursday's close, ending the week at 3.190%. Read our daily markets roundup here.

Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, advanced 0.7% on Friday to finish at $93.02 a barrel, dropping 6% for the week. WTI, its U.S. counterpart, rose 0.3% on Friday, finishing the week down 6.7%.

Russia on Friday said it would suspend its natural-gas pipeline to Europe after G-7 finance ministers rolled out a plan to cap the price of Russian oil, heightening tensions in energy markets.

In metals, front-month gold for September delivery rose 0.8% Friday, snapping a three-session losing streak but still finishing the week down 1.5%. Silver rose 1.3% for the day, ending the week down 5.2%.

Stocks rose for much of Friday's session, losing steam in the afternoon after rising following the release of the latest jobs numbers. Low trading volume in the last day before a holiday weekend likely also contributed to volatility.

“I got the sense that there was a feeling of relief, but relief doesn’t necessarily mean, ‘Let’s jam the market higher,’” said Steve Sosnick, chief strategist at Interactive Brokers.
